Most of Dota players, pub players or pro players are learning the new Dota 2 items from the Patch 6.84. One of the items is the Lotus Orb. Lotus Orb is an active Inventory item which allow you to apply a shield on your hero and to your ally hero unit which re-cast most targeted spells back to the spell caster. It also takes damage from both hero unit. The Orb gives you additional 10 damage, 10 armor, 5 HP Regeneration and a 125% of Mana Regeneration. You need to have Platemail, Perseverance and a Recipe to build Lotus Orb and the orb costs 100 mana in order to activate the item to a unit and has 17 second cool down.

The item Lotus Orb is an active item in your hero's inventory which you can pop or apply it to your won hero or to ally, the active effect of the item is the Echo Shell, Echo shell generates a round shell or shield to a unit once the Orb has been applied. When an enemy casted a spell on the shielded unit it will also takes damage from the spell from the caster. Lotus orb will not work on an nuke spell and skill from enemies, it only affects those targeted spells. This is the best item against intelligence support heroes that has targeted spells and stunner like Lina, Lion, Bane Elemental, Zeus, Ogre Magi, Nyx Assassin and Tinker. And probably a good item for tanker heroes like Undying, Axe, Sand King, Tiny, Timbersaw, Earthshaker, Ogre Magi, Earth Spirit and Bristleback. Lotus Orb is more useful in early game and useless in late game depending on how you will use it in late game. I advice, you better apply Echo shell to your carry hero in late game it would be more helpful for the carry of your team.

From your experience and observation with the item during your game, you can also suggest in the comment below on how you use the item against your enemy.
